Monument Valley

Day 15

After viewing the east rim of the canyon we visited the Watchtower – built as a structure to provide the widest possible view of the Grand Canyon yet harmonise with its setting. They hired architect Mary Colter to design it and include a gift shop and rest area. It has an internal spiral staircase that goes up 5 levels. The walls and ceiling are covered in paintings from the First Nation and it provides a magnificent view.

From there we went to the Cameron Trading Post to hear the story of the WW2 Code Talkers and how they were finally recognized by Washington in 2003 for their role in the taking of Iwojima

Next was a trip to John Wayne Country – Monument Valley. It was just as you see it in the movies – nothing has changed. While we were there we took an open tour bus – no sides and a tin roof – into the mountains. Ían rode a horse to the edge of a cliff while I took his photo. He was the only one in the bus to do it.

From there we drove to Lake Powell Lodge for the night. It is right on Lake Powell so we finished the day with a Pizza and pool party overlooking the lake and marina.

Another excellent day.
