Lake powell

Day 16

After a 6.00am breakfast our coach took us to a checkpoint for clearance for the Glen Canyon Dam as it is considered a Homeland Security Target. We then changed to another coach which took us through a 2mile tunnel which went down to the dam wall and the Colorado River.

We boarded a large (20 person) inflatable with a 135 HP motor which took us 15miles between the Glen Canyon Dam and the historic Lees Ferry, gateway to the Grand Canyon. We started at the dam wall which towered 190mtr above us.

The canyon walls were amazing with magnificent rock formations showing the different layers dating back thousands of years. We stepped ashore to view the ancient petroglyphs (rock art) left by the ancestral Puebloan peoples.

Our Native American or First Nation guide (we are not allowed to call them Indian) told the area’s story, native culture, pointed out the wildlife, and the rivers role in the southwest’s water and power delivery system. He also played the ancient flute which was really beautiful and we just floated down the river admiring the changing view. Along the way we got wet from the spray and if was really cold (46⁰F).

We had lunch at Page before taking a walk across the bridge over the dam wall. We then headed back to the Hotel to get ready for our afternoon cruise.

Lake Powell has a shoreline longer than the entire west coast of the United States and is the second largest man made lake in the country. We took a 90 minute cruise of the lower portion at Antelope Canyon. With its sandy beaches, sapphire blue water and incredible red rock scenery it was truly an amazing end to the day before we returned for dinner.
